Tips and Advice for Pet Supplies for Your New Feathered, Furry, or Other Addition

Posted on: September 17, 2011

Are you getting a new pet sometime soon? Research and pet supplies are going to be important. You don't always need to get everything at once but you'll want the basics. You'll also want some solid information to make the transition into your home as easy and stress-free for all involved as possible.  Here is some helpful info for you, whether you're getting a dog, a cat, a bird, or another type of pet:

Dogs

Your new dog will need a number of things whether you're getting a puppy or adopting an older dog. You'll want a collar, a leash, a pet bed, food, food bowl and water bowl, and some toys to get started.

You may opt for extras, such as a carrying cage, doggie sweater, or something else but the basics are needed. Don't forget to inquire about a pet license, depending on where you live. And you'll want to find a local veterinarian for vaccinations and so on. It's wise to sort out a vet early on, rather than waiting to find one upon discovering your pet is sick. Talk to friends and neighbours about who they recommend or take a look online for local veterinarians.

Cats

Getting pet supplies for kittens or older cats? You will obviously need a litter box and kitty litter along with their food and dishes. There are several varieties of litter and litter boxes. If you have more than one feline in your house, you should consider buying at least 2 different litter boxes. You can find litter box liners, scoopable litter, scoops, deodorizers, and even boxes that will do raking and separation of dirty from clean litter for you.

Birds

Birds need more than just a bird cage and some seed. You'll likely want floor dressings, toys, treats, and you might want nesting material as well. It's a good idea to purchase a book on the type of bird you're getting so that you can supply it with all the necessary items as well as get tips for introducing it to a new home or introducing it to an existing cage with other feathered friends already living inside.

Other Pets

Thinking about a hamster, setting up an aquarium, buying a ferret, a bunny, a reptile, or some other pet? The web provides a lot of information to help you learn about different pets as well as what pet supplies you'll need for set up and for an ongoing basis. You'll also find a number of online sources for pet supplies, often with great discounts. Enjoy your new pet! Good for you for researching to get well prepared!
